Packaged rooftop units (RTU'S) cool about half of all commercial floor space in North America. New units manufactured today incorporate technological advances that provide significant energy savings, improved occupant comfort, and reduced energy costs by lowering peak operating demand.
New RTUs – Better by Design
When the weather is warm and humid, a lot of energy is required to keep commercial buildings cool. In fact, cooling can account for over 20 % of an office building's total electricity consumption. Today’s RTUs benefit from advanced technologies and innovative engineering designs. Factory-installed microprocessor controls can reduce energy consumption while maintaining comfortable conditions in the building. Many new units have a communication interface for connection to an energy management system or a demand-controlled ventilation system.
Manufacturers are applying variable air volume (VAV) capabilities to newer RTUs. VAV systems are able to condition spaces with different cooling and heating loads by matching the airflows to the different loads in different spaces. This technology employs variable-speed drives to supply the varied airflows. VAV not only improves occupant comfort, it also decreases energy use over single-zone systems because it reduces fan-energy consumption.
Modern RTU’s can also include digital operation and temperature controls, high efficient direct drive ECM motors or variable frequency drive (VFD) motors. Two-stage scroll compressor technology reduces operating costs by providing efficient and accurate temperature control. Energy saving technologies when combined with scheduled preventive maintenance will reduce energy costs by lowering energy consumption and peak demand loads. Planned replacement of aging RTUs can save money and reduces the risk of unexpected failure and costly emergency repairs.
