Commercial make-up air units (M/U/A) are specifically designed to provide compensating (or makeup outside air) to pressurize building envelopes or general, process, and combustion exhaust. A variety of configurations, tempering options, and heating and cooling capacities are available to assure that the M/U/A system will be able to provide make-up air for your applications.
Make-up air systems are often installed in residential high-rise buildings to provide a supply of fresh air into hallways which slightly pressurizes the building envelop. This prevents untreated air from being drawn into the building through windows or doors. It also serves to push unwanted cooking odours from seeping into the adjoining hallway. If adequate air is not introduced into the building, a negative pressure condition will develop. This is due to the fact that the MUA system is not running to compensate for the air being discharged by the exhaust fan. The result is an ineffective and uncomfortable system that is extremely wasteful and costly to operate.
What to Look For?
Buildings which have inadequate makeup air (or excess exhaust) and are operating with a negative pressure condition have several common characteristics.
The building is uncomfortable and has noticeable temperature fluctuations.
Exterior doors are difficult and hazardous to open. A door which slams shut can result in serious injuries.
Cold drafts can be felt rushing into the building around cracks and openings.
Exhaust systems do not perform at the rated design capacity. Inadequate or ineffective exhaust may result in poor air quality.
Gravity vents from heating equipment or process may back-vent into the conditioned space, drawing potentially hazardous products of combustion (Flue Gases) into the building.
